Try Scorefixwala

Scorefixwala drafts documents from the information you give. It is not a law firm, a credit repair company or a bureau, does not give legal advice and cannot guarantee a correction or a score change. Accurate information cannot be removed by a dispute. Rules and timelines are based on RBI directions and the US Fair Credit Reporting Act as of 2026; check current rules on rbi.org.in, cms.rbi.org.in or consumerfinance.gov, and consult a lawyer for losses or legal action.

Free error checker and deadline tracker

Pick what is wrong on your report to see if a dispute can fix it, who must correct it and what proof to collect. Add your dispute date to see your deadlines and, in India, the ₹100/day compensation you are owed. No sign-up.

Usually fixable by a dispute if it is wrong

What it means: An account under your name or PAN that you never opened. Either the lender mixed up two customers or someone used your documents (identity fraud).

Who to write to: The bureau (ownership dispute) and the lender's grievance / nodal officer. If it looks like fraud, also report it at cybercrime.gov.in or helpline 1930 and attach the acknowledgement.

Evidence to collect

  • PAN and Aadhaar (masked) to prove who you are
  • Written statement that you never applied
  • Police / cybercrime complaint number if it is fraud
  • Screenshot of the account line in the report

Ask the lender for a copy of the loan application and KYC used. If it isn't yours, they cannot keep reporting it against you.

The dispute ladder, step by step

India: CIBIL, Experian, Equifax, CRIF High Mark

  1. Get your full report

Each bureau (TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax, CRIF High Mark) gives one free full report a year. Lenders report to all of them, so check each one: an error can sit on one bureau only.

  2. Dispute with the bureau and write to the lender (day 0)

Raise the dispute on the bureau's website and save the dispute ID. On the same day, email the lender's grievance or nodal officer with your proof, because only the lender can change what it reported.

  3. Lender's deadline (day 21)

Under RBI's compensation framework the lender gets 21 days to send corrected data to the bureau, and the whole complaint must be resolved within 30 days.

  4. Claim ₹100 per day (after day 30)

If it isn't fixed in 30 calendar days, you are owed ₹100 for each extra day, paid by whoever caused the delay, into your bank account within 5 working days of resolution.

  5. RBI Ombudsman

Rejected, ignored or no compensation paid: file a free complaint at cms.rbi.org.in against the lender or the bureau. Both are covered by the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme.

USA: Equifax, Experian, TransUnion

  1. Pull all three reports

Free every week at AnnualCreditReport.com. Note each wrong item, the account number and which bureaus show it.

  2. Dispute with each bureau (section 611) and the furnisher (section 623)

Send a written dispute with copies of your proof. Certified mail with return receipt gives you a dated record. Identity theft: use a section 605B block with an FTC Identity Theft Report instead.

  3. 30 days (sometimes 45)

The bureau must investigate and send results within 5 business days of finishing. Items it can't verify must be deleted or corrected.

  4. Verified anyway? Ask how

Request the method of verification (section 611(a)(7)); the bureau must describe it within 15 days. Add a 100-word statement of dispute if needed.

  5. CFPB complaint, then a lawyer

File at consumerfinance.gov/complaint. The FCRA lets you sue for willful or negligent violations and recover attorney fees, so many consumer lawyers take strong cases with no upfront fee.

Scorefixwala writes the paperwork for each step: the bureau dispute, the lender letter, the compensation claim and the Ombudsman or CFPB complaint.

Never do this

  • Pay anyone who promises to remove correct negative entries. Only the lender can change what it reported, and accurate data stays.
  • In the US, pay a credit repair company before it has done the work. The Credit Repair Organizations Act bans upfront fees.
  • Send original documents. Send copies and keep the originals.
  • Dispute everything at once with copy-paste letters. Bureaus can treat those as frivolous; specific disputes with proof get fixed.

Who it's for

  • "My loan was rejected because CIBIL shows a late payment I never made."
  • "I closed my HDFC card in 2023 and it still shows ₹14,000 outstanding."
  • "I paid the full amount but CIBIL says 'Settled'. The bank says it's not their problem."
  • "There's a personal loan from an app I've never heard of on my report."
  • "Experian 'verified' a wrong late payment. What do I send next?"

Why people use Scorefixwala

A single wrong line on your credit report - a late payment you never missed, a loan closed years ago still showing 'active', 'settled' when you paid every rupee, or a card someone else opened in your name - can get a home loan rejected or priced higher. Most people raise a one-line dispute on the bureau's website, get 'information verified by the lender' back a month later, and give up. The bureau can only change what the lender confirms, so the dispute has to reach the lender with proof, and the rules on deadlines and compensation have to be quoted. Scorefixwala tells you whether your error can be fixed by a dispute, then writes the whole set: the exact text for the bureau's dispute form, the letter to the lender's grievance officer with your evidence listed, a dated action plan, and when it isn't fixed in time, the ₹100-per-day compensation claim and the RBI Ombudsman complaint (India) or the method-of-verification request and CFPB complaint (USA). You file it yourself, free, on the official channels.

  • ✓ First tells you honestly if a dispute can fix your entry, and who must correct it: the bureau or the lender
  • ✓ Ready-to-paste text for the CIBIL, Experian, Equifax or CRIF High Mark online dispute form, specific to each wrong account and month
  • ✓ Letter to the lender's grievance / nodal officer citing the Credit Information Companies (Regulation) Act and RBI's 21-day and 30-day timelines
  • ✓ Claim for RBI's ₹100-per-day compensation when the correction is late, and a ready RBI Ombudsman (cms.rbi.org.in) complaint
  • ✓ USA: FCRA section 611 bureau disputes, section 623 direct dispute to the creditor, section 605B identity theft block and CFPB complaint
  • ✓ Evidence checklist and a dated plan: what to send, where, and what to do on day 21, 30 and 45
  • ✓ Free error checker and deadline tracker below the tool, no sign-up

Frequently asked questions

How long does CIBIL take to correct an error?

Under RBI's compensation framework, a credit information complaint must be resolved within 30 calendar days of filing. The lender gets 21 days to send corrected data to the bureau and the bureau the rest. After the bureau updates the record, your score can take a few more days to refresh.

Can I really get ₹100 per day if it isn't fixed in 30 days?

Yes. RBI's framework (circular of 26 October 2023, in force since April 2024) gives ₹100 per calendar day beyond 30 days. The lender pays if it didn't send the correction within 21 days, otherwise the bureau pays, and it must reach your bank account within 5 working days of resolution. If it is refused, you can complain to the RBI Ombudsman. Scorefixwala's escalation mode works out the amount from your dates and writes the claim.

My account says 'Settled' but I paid in full. Can it be changed to 'Closed'?

Yes, if you really paid the full dues: send the lender your NOC and payment proof and dispute it with each bureau. If you did a one-time settlement for less, 'Settled' is accurate and a dispute will be rejected. The honest fix is to pay the waived amount, get a fresh NOC saying 'closed' and ask the lender to update the bureaus. The tool tells you which case you're in.

Why did CIBIL reject my dispute saying the lender confirmed the data?

Bureaus don't change data on their own: they ask the lender, and if the lender confirms, the dispute closes. That's why the letter to the lender's grievance or nodal officer with your proof matters as much as the bureau dispute. If the lender confirmed wrong data, the escalation mode writes the re-dispute and the RBI Ombudsman complaint.

Will a dispute remove correct negative entries?

No. A dispute fixes errors. Accurate late payments, write-offs and settlements stay. Be wary of anyone who charges to 'clean' your CIBIL: only the lender can change what it reported. For a genuine one-off late payment you can ask the lender for a goodwill update, which it may refuse.

Do I have to dispute with every bureau?

Yes, if the error shows on more than one. India has four bureaus (TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax, CRIF High Mark) and the US three (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion). Each keeps its own file. Fixing the lender's data usually fixes all of them, but file with each bureau that shows it.

How does a US credit dispute work?

Send a written dispute to each bureau under FCRA section 611; it has 30 days to investigate (45 in some cases) and must delete what it can't verify. You can also dispute directly with the creditor under section 623. For identity theft, an FTC Identity Theft Report lets you ask for a section 605B block, which the bureau must apply within 4 business days. If the bureau 'verifies' a wrong item, ask how it was verified and file a CFPB complaint.

What does it cost?

Your first draft is free. A full case costs ₹149 in India or $3 in the US, one time, and includes 2 revisions. Filing a dispute with the bureaus, the RBI Ombudsman or the CFPB is free. No subscription.

Do you file the dispute for me?

No. You file it yourself on the bureau's website, by email to the lender, on cms.rbi.org.in or by mail in the US. That keeps it free, and you keep every acknowledgement. We don't need your credit report login.
